3。5 stars。 Not my genre, but a good enough quick read。 Definitely far fetched and a sci-fi read, but it kept me interested and i read this book very quickly (which is saying a lot for this slow reader)。
Robin,
Erica Ferencik seems to specialize in getting people away from their place in the world and dropping them into nature that is decidedly not warm and cozy。 This book is especially frigid with its setting in Greenland。 Add in some death and a child of mysterious origins, and it makes a great story。
Lacy,
Girl In Ice is my first Erica Ferenicik read, so I was not sure what to expect。A linguist is sent to Greenland to help translate a girl that was thawed from a block of ice, the same place that her twin brother dead under interesting circumstances。It was a great idea and I could not stop reading, but the plot was slow and the story line of why the brother died was just brushed aside and the reasoning behind the girl coming back to life after being frozen was so implausible。Thanks, NetGalley and G Girl In Ice is my first Erica Ferenicik read, so I was not sure what to expect。A linguist is sent to Greenland to help translate a girl that was thawed from a block of ice, the same place that her twin brother dead under interesting circumstances。It was a great idea and I could not stop reading, but the plot was slow and the story line of why the brother died was just brushed aside and the reasoning behind the girl coming back to life after being frozen was so implausible。Thanks, NetGalley and Gallery Books for the opportunity。 。。。more

I could not put Girl in Ice down。 Erica Ferencik developed vivid, flawed characters in this gripping, sci-fi thriller。 Sci-fi may not be the right category for it, but when the book is centering around thawing a girl frozen in ice for centuries, it seems like the right category。 There were many twists and turns in this book which kept me reading。 If you're looking for a thrilling, intellectual read, this is it。 I could not put Girl in Ice down。 Erica Ferencik developed vivid, flawed characters in this gripping, sci-fi thriller。 Sci-fi may not be the right category for it, but when the book is centering around thawing a girl frozen in ice for centuries, it seems like the right category。 There were many twists and turns in this book which kept me reading。 If you're looking for a thrilling, intellectual read, this is it。 。。。more
Lori Anderson,
I love an isolated location in books and this one set in icy Greenland where a young girl was thawed out alive that was found in ice did not disappoint。 Throw in a mystery surrounding a twin's mysterious death, I am in。 This book started as a slow-burn mystery with a super intriguing storyline。 This is a departure from my typical thriller reads。 Even though the premise was somewhat fantastical, I was not deterred from getting emersed in the story。 I love stories that have an element of anthropol I love an isolated location in books and this one set in icy Greenland where a young girl was thawed out alive that was found in ice did not disappoint。 Throw in a mystery surrounding a twin's mysterious death, I am in。 This book started as a slow-burn mystery with a super intriguing storyline。 This is a departure from my typical thriller reads。 Even though the premise was somewhat fantastical, I was not deterred from getting emersed in the story。 I love stories that have an element of anthropology or archaeology involving science。 I liked this book a lot but found the more I read the more I liked it。 The bond that developed between Val and Sigrid was heartwarming as Val became a protector and a maternal figure navigating how to communicate with Sigrid。 I found the linguistic part of the story and Sigrid's backstory cleverly written。 There were plot twists that did not play out how I thought they would。 The character's true intentions were questioned and tested。 The ending was super intense and suspenseful。 The icy wintry locale added to the suspense and you could just feel the isolation as it became a fight for survival。 I recommend picking this one up if it sounds interesting to you。Thank you @NetGalley and @Gallery Scout Press for a digital Arc of this book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more
Susan,
Is there a morpheme or sentence-word in Greenlandic for “a novel that unleashes the gleeful exhilaration of plunging into freezing water on New Years Day to remind yourself you’re alive and then recounting the experience wrapped in a blanket, sipping hot cocoa by a roaring fire?” If so, that’s GIRL IN ICE。 Loved every lyrical, spellbinding moment。
Lynn O'Brien,
Great book so far。 Not something I would normally read, but I won it in a giveaway and so glad I did!

Emma Fylstra,
The setting was great, with amazing tension growth throughout the novel, endearing characters。Only thing I slightly disliked was the sorta agoraphobia aspect? She's like 'I can't dare to leave my hometown!' then gets on a plane with like。 Little mention。 I felt like her anxiety-to the levels that she needs medication- could have been worked in better。 The setting was great, with amazing tension growth throughout the novel, endearing characters。Only thing I slightly disliked was the sorta agoraphobia aspect? I thoroughly enjoyed this。 The author has managed to capture the spirit of Greenland so well that I felt like I was there in the freezing cold。

Very atmospheric。 Definitely wanted to punt Wyatt。

I hated it。 。。。more
Miranda,
Girl in Ice is one of those books that I think is a good one to sit and read in one sitting。 Thinking about it too much in-between reading found me getting too caught up on some of the aspects of the more sci-fi pieces that seemed a bit stretched and so, to give a fair review, I started over from the beginning and read it through。 Once I had the chance to just sit and read until I finished it and get lost in the world of the novel, I found myself enjoying it。 I love the mystery that lingers in m Girl in Ice is one of those books that I think is a good one to sit and read in one sitting。 Thinking about it too much in-between reading found me getting too caught up on some of the aspects of the more sci-fi pieces that seemed a bit stretched and so, to give a fair review, I started over from the beginning and read it through。 Once I had the chance to just sit and read until I finished it and get lost in the world of the novel, I found myself enjoying it。 I love the mystery that lingers in many ways, and I was pleased when I discovered I had figured out part of the mystery。 I also really enjoyed the way Val interacts with the girl and builds a relationship with her。 There were some parts that didn't resonate with me as well as others, and there were a few characters I wasn't too fond of, but overall it's an enjoyable novel that deals with grief, loss, mental health, and climate change。 *Content warning for mentions of death (both human and animal)* 。。。more

This was the first book I have read by Erica Ferencik。 I enjoyed the pacing of the story。 I had a difficult time connecting to what felt like the Science-Fiction aspect of it。 I did not read anything about the book before jumping into it, so it caught me off guard。 I am not a science lover, but I do find it incredibly difficult to suspend disbelief in order to believe human beings might be able to be frozen solid then still be brought back to life。 That said, the atmosphere in the isolated arcti This was the first book I have read by Erica Ferencik。 I enjoyed the pacing of the story。 I had a difficult time connecting to what felt like the Science-Fiction aspect of it。 I did not read anything about the book before jumping into it, so it caught me off guard。 I am not a science lover, but I do find it incredibly difficult to suspend disbelief in order to believe human beings might be able to be frozen solid then still be brought back to life。 That said, the atmosphere in the isolated arctic conditions was awesomely foreboding and creepy and for anyone who doesn't have a difficult time reading sci-fi blended into their thrillers, I think this book will be a bigger hit with。 。。。more

This book was pretty hard to really enjoy since for the most part it was depressing。 It was interesting just not past the climate change reality check it gives you。 The worlds going to die but this little girl was thawed and begins speaking a dead language。 Then there is the mystery of her dead brother… did he commit suicide or was he killed。 It really didn’t interest me enough to care。

I really enjoyed this book。 It appears to be just what my addled brain needed this weekend。 Valerie Chesterfield is a linguist, struggling to come to terms with the suicide of her twin brother, a scientist working on a project in a remote area of Greenland。 One day she gets a message from his supervisor and mentor telling her that they had found a young girl in the ice, thawed her, and that she was alive。 He asks Valerie to join them to help communicate with this girl。 Clearly, he has ulterior m I really enjoyed this book。 It appears to be just what my addled brain needed this weekend。 Valerie Chesterfield is a linguist, struggling to come to terms with the suicide of her twin brother, a scientist working on a project in a remote area of Greenland。 One day she gets a message from his supervisor and mentor telling her that they had found a young girl in the ice, thawed her, and that she was alive。 He asks Valerie to join them to help communicate with this girl。 Clearly, he has ulterior motives, but so does Valerie。 She wants to know what really happened to her brother。 This book wasn’t particularly deep, but I thought the story was clever and interesting enough to keep me turning those pages。 。。。more

3。5 rounded up。 Ferencik's books are rather hit or miss for me。 I read The River at Night first and loved it, went back and picked up Repeaters and wasn't impressed。 Got an ARC of Into the Jungle and also wasn't impressed。 This one, however, was pretty good, and it's a testament to The River at Night that I kept trying in spite of 1 hit and 2 misses (for me)。 Enter Girl in Ice。 While it requires a *much* higher suspension of disbelief, with parts bordering on total implausibility, the dialectica 3。5 rounded up。 Ferencik's books are rather hit or miss for me。 I read The River at Night first and loved it, went back and picked up Repeaters and wasn't impressed。 Got an ARC of Into the Jungle and also wasn't impressed。 This one, however, was pretty good, and it's a testament to The River at Night that I kept trying in spite of 1 hit and 2 misses (for me)。 Enter Girl in Ice。 While it requires a *much* higher suspension of disbelief, with parts bordering on total implausibility, the dialectical explorations more than make up for it。 The historical elements make up for it, and so do the beautiful descriptions of the scenery。 Don't go into this one expecting the science to be right (it's not, unfortunately), but stay for the other elements。 。。。more
